Project Overview: Roof Maintenance & Zinc Moss Prevention Installation

In the damp climate of the Pacific Northwest and Portland Metro, moss, algae, and organic debris easily take hold on architectural asphalt shingles. Over time, moss roots lift shingle edges and retain moisture, accelerating deterioration and leading to roof leaks.

This roofing maintenance and repair project focused on removing aging, bent, corroded metal strips and installing brand-new galvanized zinc moss-prevention strips along the roof ridge line, ensuring clean water runoff and long-term shingle protection.

Scope of Work & Real Craftsmanship Details

• Surface Moss Removal & Shingle Inspection: Carefully cleared existing moss buildup and lichen growth along the roof slopes and valleys without damaging the protective shingle granules.
• Removal of Damaged Strips: Removed old, twisted, and improperly fastened metal strips that had deteriorated over years of exposure.
• Galvanized Zinc Moss-Defense Strips: Installed straight, heavy-gauge zinc strips along the ridge cap and high roof sections. As rain washes over the zinc, it releases natural zinc carbonate ions that prevent moss, lichen, and algae spores from growing down the roof slopes.
• Watertight Fastening & Sealant: Fastened all strips using corrosion-resistant neoprene-washered roofing screws, sealed with high-grade polyurethane exterior roofing sealant over all fastener heads.
• Ventilation & Flashing Inspection: Inspected existing roof exhaust vents and surrounding flashings to ensure complete perimeter water-tightness.
