Deck and Porch

Project Overview: Custom Cedar Railing & Deck Restoration

This outdoor living renovation in the Portland Metro area upgraded an existing multi-level composite deck staircase. The original setup featured a tired, weathered, solid grey-painted railing with heavy solid skirts on the stringers that looked faded, enclosed, and dated.

Skyview Remodeling replaced the old grey railing with custom natural Western Red Cedar posts, top rails, and vertical balusters finished in a warm amber exterior stain, while thoroughly cleaning and restoring the composite decking surfaces.

Scope of Work & Real Craftsmanship Details

• Railing Demolition & Site Prep: Carefully removed the old, faded grey-painted railing system and side skirt boards without compromising the structural integrity of the underlying stair stringers.
• Custom Western Red Cedar Fabrication: Built a brand-new handrail and baluster system using premium, naturally weather-resistant Western Red Cedar lumber, known for its stability and resistance to rot in the Pacific Northwest.
• Warm Protective Stain Application: Sealed all new cedar woodwork with a rich, protective exterior wood stain and sealer to highlight the natural grain while defending against UV sun fading and winter moisture.
• Code-Compliant Baluster Spacing: Installed vertical cedar balusters at precise, code-compliant intervals (under 4 inches apart) with a smooth-to-the-touch contoured top grab rail for family safety.
• Deep Cleaning & Surface Restoration: Power-washed the composite stair treads, landings, and adjoining deck surface, washing away accumulated surface dirt and weather grime to restore a uniform, fresh appearance.
